Real Power...!!!

Image by Denis Collette...!!! via Flickr

In recent years there has been a lot of talk in our culture about personal power, how to own it, how it manifests and how to develop it if you don’t feel you have it.

Personal power can have many different meanings depending on who is defining it.

From an energetic perspective personal power is about:

Healthy self esteem

Balanced sense of responsibility

Ability to set and maintain boundaries

Freedom from unhealthy guilt and shame

Self knowledge– having clarity about what you believe and value

Courage—you have the courage to express who you are and what you believe

Integrity—your beliefs, feelings, expression and actions are in alignment with each other

Expansion of personal power is most often gone about intellectually which can make you feel like Sisyphus rolling the rock up the mountain only to have to start again as it rolls back down out of your control. Engaging your energy system as an ally can be of enormous help to bring the issue of personal power from a desired quality to a comfortable reality.

Energy for change

The abilities to act, to adjust and to change are governed by the Solar Plexus chakra.

It is a major player in your capacity to change yourself and your situation in life.

The root is about physical energy and survival. The sacral chakra regulates emotional energy and survival. In the third chakra we begin to look at transformation and the potential to bring change and growth to ourselves and our world.

The element associated with the solar plexus is fire, a great metaphor as fire changes all it touches.  Fire transforms matter into invisible elements like heat and gas. The solar plexus is where we transform energy from the lower and move it up into the higher chakras.

Signs of a healthy third chakra
When the energy of this chakra flows smoothly and is balanced there is inner confidence and vitality…a person has an awareness of their uniqueness and value…people respect their integrity and respond to their energy.

A healthy third chakras allows for spontaneity, openness and loving…. energy moves freely up into the heart chakra. With channels open to the lower chakras from the solar plexus there is a sense of being grounded and an ability to go with the flow.

A strong third chakra produces a sense of personal worth that helps to avoid excess and to respect boundaries. There is a capacity for enjoying a challenge without becoming a workaholic.

Imbalances in the Solar Plexus
The third energy center is located in the solar plexus between the bottom ribs and belly button. This chakra develops between 8 and 12 years old. The solar plexus governs the stomach, liver, gallbladder, pancreas and adrenal glands. The element of this center is fire. Physically imbalance here often includes digestive complaints, disturbances in blood sugar, and food intolerance. The solar plexus is responsible for helping to digest and transform our food; it performs a similar function for life experience.

Psychologically imbalances in the solar plexus can lead to a need to manipulate and control others. An excess of energy here results in insensitivity to others, burn out and perhaps intolerance to those with less energy. Other issues that arise with excessive energy here are: tendencies toward being judgmental, aggressive, and perfectionistic. Vanity and pride are also very real possibilities as are hatred and anger. These qualities may be openly expressed or they may be repressed.

A deficit of energy in the solar plexus results in emotional neediness and attention seeking, as well as difficulty putting ideas into action. There may also be a fear of rejection, indecisiveness, lack of confidence and a poor self image.  It is not hard to see that this lack of energy can lead to depression.

When this center is weak as just described there is a tendency to be very vulnerable to the ideas, thoughts and opinions of others. A strong and balanced third chakra helps you to have a solid sense of your own power and worth. You are able to set goals based on your desires and act to manifest them in the world. You have leadership qualities and are an innovator without being over bearing or controlling with others. Your immunity is strong, you manage anger well, and though you have energy to take action in the world, you can also be peaceful and still.

Sacral Chakra: Emotional Intelligence and Power

Thursday, January 19th, 2012
English: Logo Connecting Emotional Intelligence

Image via Wikipedia

The Sacral Chakra is located in the pelvis approximately three finger widths below the navel and it develops between 3 and 8 years of age. With proper support at this stage we learn about feelings and how to express and manage them. With adequate guidance, modeling and mirroring a healthy sense of entitlement (deserving) and self worth are developed. The second chakra is the seat of our emotions and regulates the flow and distribution of energy.

Physically the sacral is associated with the health of the reproductive organs and hips. It also governs the body’s liquids, E. G. blood, lymph, mucus, saliva. Health issues that reflect an imbalance in this chakra occur in the areas mentioned.

Metaphors From Water
The sacral chakra’s element is water. As we think about the qualities of water we can get a felt sense of how second chakra energy functions in our lives. Nature clearly demonstrates both the power and attributes of water and reflects the possible states for the manifestation of our energy.

Water can be smooth and flowing as in a river stream, it can pack the power of ocean waves crashing on the shore; it can be stagnant as a pond that receives no fresh and cleansing input. Water can be as refreshing as a mountain lake, cold as the frozen tundra or volatile as steam exploding from a too tight container. Water can be refreshing, life giving and life enhancing. However, too much or too little water can be a problem as can stagnation, or the lack of containment. These, as we all know, can be harmful or destructive. And so it can be with the emotional power of the second chakra.

Construction or Destruction—Your Choice
The sacral chakra has been described as a dark interior cave where all manner of demons lie but it also holds some of the most profound raw material for the creation of our lives. The negative interpretation arises as the second chakra is where our most challenging shadow material is registered. It is up to us whether we choose to work with these energies so they become our allies or leave them unconscious where they become our inner enemies.

At best this energy center is the womb of creation. It is a place where new life gathers its power and is gestated until it is ripe and ready to be birthed into the world. It is a profound, complex and powerful center of our core nature.

My opinion is that a useful and productive way to approach this energy center is that of getting to know a multifaceted friend full of meaning who has wisdom and great gifts for us hidden beneath some pain. This friend needs kindness, compassion and acceptance. Once embraced in this way the full power of this mysterious interior spring can nurture our lives and be a source of resilience and emotional intelligence.

Emotional Symptoms of Imbalance
One clue that something is amiss in this energy center is feelings of shame or of having done something wrong. This feeling is different than the healthy guilt that comes from having actually broken a law, done harm or crossed a line that is against one’s own integrity. Shame is a sense of BEING wrong, flawed or bad in the deep inner fabric of your being. There may be confusion and lack of understanding of where this feeling came from. Often the origin of shame is the result of projected emotions from others early in a person’s life. These feelings are rooted deeply in the disowned feelings of others that got absorbed into the field of a growing child. Once something is inside us we feel it and that being so, we believe it is ours to own.

Other signs that there are issues or blocked energy in the second chakra are: difficulty appreciating life’s goodness; nothing seems good enough and depression can result. There can also be a sense of being stuck, of having no ability to adapt or change; there may be insensitivity to one’s own feelings and emotional needs and an inability to express emotion; there may be denial of pleasure with unyielding, strict and rigid self imposed boundaries—this can include healthy practices done in the extreme. An excess of energy in this center may show itself as a compulsion for pleasure and being extremely emotional.

At its best the sacral chakra is liquid and flowing providing an ability to be flexible and adaptable. However we can go too far in this direction as well and create imbalance. You know this is a problem if you feel in a constant state of flux with an inability to ground or set boundaries; there also may be a tendency to be overly emotional and dramatic.

Opening and balancing the sacral chakra fundamentally involves letting go of shame, unhealthy guilt and frustration and learning to go with the flow of life. Balancing the sacral chakra allows emotion to freely move through our systems. Just as flowing water is purifying, refreshing and revitalizing so it is with feelings set in motion without resistance that includes proper channeling. When the energy here is open, flowing and balanced we are responsive, intuitive, buoyant, and full of dreams and healthy desire.

Truth Does Not Get Old

Monday, January 16th, 2012

I have come across this video a couple of times in the past few weeks and am struck by the power and presence of someone who speaks their truth from deep in their soul. It is also quite a startling constrast —the costume VS the words. If you get a chance there is also a related piece on YouTube that speaks about the similarities/synchronicities re: many of the details of Chaplin’s and Hitler’s lives…in my opinion it is a great testimonial to the concept of consciousness and how we choose to use our energy, minds and hearts.

Charlie Chaplin: I don’t normally speak in films, but when I do, I make everyone skeet their pants.

The Human Energy Field in Real Life

English: The Ankh shape meaning the chakras sy...

A Map for Self Knowledge
Your aura or energy field is like a ‘map’ that provides the means and guidance to understand yourself more deeply.   Each of the chakras (energy centers) that make up your energy field contain information regarding a stage in the development of Self. Your history, as well as the results of how successfully (or not) you have navigated the stages of development, are contained in the chakras.  Through becoming more aware of the state of your energy system, you can heal imbalances that resulted from incomplete stages of experience thereby strengthening your  vitality, improving your health and relationships, as well as have all your inner power available to more easily create a life that is the best expression of YOU! In addition, learning to restore balance to your energy system makes it easier to develop your intuition, activate inner peace, expand spiritual awareness and engage higher levels problem solving than those available to the lower mind.

Chakras: Containers of Vitality and Information
The ‘organs’ of the Human Subtle Energy System are called Chakras. The word roughly translates to ‘spinning wheel’ or ‘wheel of light’. This basically describes the movement of electromagnetic energy through a particular part of the body. The chakras are not organs in the same sense as the stomach, spleen or liver. They are more like electromagnetic spaces and are located in the same area as the seven Endocrine Glands and Major Nerve Plexuses.

These energetic centers each add a layer of energy to the field that both surrounds and penetrates the body. Each chakra has an ‘area of influence’ in the the functioning of your physical, mental, emotional and spiritual being. They also as previously mentioned serve as a sort of invisible computer disk that records and stores life experience. As noted author Carolyn Myss has stated this energy system is how our “psychology becomes our biology”.

Your Personal Energy Influences Outcomes in Life
Your personal health, relationship to money/others, self worth/esteem, emotional intelligence, ability to communicate or use higher level functions such as intuition and creativity are all related to a strong, coherent flow of energy through our systems.Understanding your life from an energetic perspective provides you with more effective options for releasing what is not serving you and restoring a deep sense of value and quality to your life. You can learn to manage your energy for optimal advantage to enhance your vitality, improve healing responses, revive a tired mind and raise weary spirits!

Subsequent posts will discuss the influence that each of the chakras have on your reality. Next up on Tues. —the Root Chakra and how it helps or hinders you in your daily life.

Discover the Tap Roots of Stress

Tuesday, January 10th, 2012
English: Effects of stress on the body.

Solutions Based on Self Knowledge Keeps Your Energy Strong and Vital

Prolonged stress leads to anger, depression and illness.  Developing a personal approach to deep self care helps you  to be in touch with who you are and what you need so you can remove the tap roots of stress and have the inner resources to navigate change and uncertainty with ease.

What is deep self care and how can you practice it?

Self care requires truly understanding yourself from the inside out and balancing the needs of your body, mind and spirit.   It involves taking time to nourish yourself every day and knowing your trigger points. Once you are aware of your trigger points, what they are really about and how they specifically impact you, you can implement the approriate  methods to target their effects thereby restoring and keeping your energy strong and vital.

Unfortunately adaptation to stress has become so commonplace that it is often a major obstacle to the self awareness necessary for skilled self care. It is easy to become so used to “the way things are’ that you believe you are not being affected by stress. This mind set is one that will allow stress to silently but steadily erode health over time.

An important first step to changing this is to pay attention to the feeling of overwhelm….a sense that there is too much to do in too short a time…..feelings of overload. These are feelings that are so widespread that they are often dismissed or accepted as par for the course. However, it is at this stage that there is a prime opportunity to change the way your body and mind are affected by stress.

More often than not you are aware of the conscious thoughts that flow through your mind. Beneath them is another stream of thought that has a lot more to do with your real feelings, beliefs and views about yourself, others and life itself that relentlessly erode your energy! Because of the nature of the ‘conversation’ at this level, no amount of intellectual planning or strategizing will be effective in counteracting the drain on your inner resources or in helping you move toward the solutions needed to maintain optimal and balanced health.

What is the answer? To give yourself time on a regular basis to let the conscious mind quiet down so you may hear the deeper river of thought and feeling that moves through you. It is here that the all important self knowledge resides. Once you understand what is happening there, you can release old worn out beliefs that no longer serve you, erase negative thoughts and feelings and create fertile ground for inner ease and peace. Through such a process you can discover a deep well spring that naturally provides a foundation for self nourishment, satisfaction and fulfillment.

It is in deep inner space that you come to really know yourself and be able to not only understand your triggers, but also have a
clearer knowledge regarding what your solutions are. As brilliant as your everyday mind is, it is your quieter inner self that holds the wisdom that will bring you to a rich, satisfying healthy way of being. In this quieter space questions can be asked that guide you toward your own strategic plan for inner world peace!

Questions that can help you on the journey:
Where am I too attached to outcomes?

Where and why do I care too much?

Where are my personal boundaries and responsibilities?

Are my expectations of self and other realistic?

If I change my way of approaching this situation, what is my worst fear? Is it realistic? What are healthy alternatives?

Times of change and uncertainty provide ripe ground for our fears and personal myths to emerge. Instead of allowing them to remain out of awareness where they are free to create chaos or employing ineffective means to manage and control them, we can choose methods that provide us a way out… a way to personal emotional freedom and inner balance. Willingness to try a different approach, patience for the learning curve and a commitment to be gentle and kind to your self will benefit you personally and
professionally.

Learning to work directly with your energy body helps to bring you to the tap roots of stress and tension, as well as providing you with the means to pull those roots out from where they live and establish a new inner garden to grow from!
