Can Compassion Help Lower Crime?

Cosmic Consciousness

Is there a link between compassion and crime? As I listened to an NPR story about the drop in violent crime for the fourth consecutive year, I wondered if this is a reflection of society becoming more community-oriented, compassionate, caring and kind. I see more and more evidence of this every day every day. Yes, there are still those who don’t have a clue and continue to operate under old paradigms. Although such voices are loud, domineering and at times unbelievable, I am convinced that this is a dwindling population. As we withdraw our focus from what feels wrong and place our energy on what feels right, each of us will experience more of the inevitable shift in consciousness. It is a sign of our times.

Look around. “Doing good” is a growing movement. You will find ample evidence that people DO care about others. In my town a Fire Fighter grows fresh produce for our local food pantry and encourages others with gardens to drop off their extra produce so that those in need can eat fresh, seasonal vegetables. Our Helping Hands organization of volunteers provides those in need with things such as support for basic necessities, back to school clothes and school supplies, holiday food baskets, items that are ready to pass along (such as bikes) and more. Some people contribute money, some contribute items, some contribute time. Some people do all three. What’s going on in your family, community, or social network that is “doing good” for others?

Daily inspiration is readily available. The Good News Network is in its 15th year of providing good news to its internet readers. They provide inspiring stories of people doing the right thing world-wide. The Daily Good, another online resource, has been providing inspiration to its subscribers since 1998, almost as long. The mainstream media is also hopping on the bandwagon. Compared to prior years, more and more time and space is dedicated to human interest stories that encourage, stimulate interest, and inspire our spirit. These are just a few examples. I know that there are many more.

As we “do good” for others, I believe that each of us becomes more compassionate, caring and kind. Being part of the same human family, deep down we have similar needs and wants. What’s “out there” in the big, wide world is a reflection of what’s “inside,” closer to home, as reflected in our community, family, and individual consciousness. As we continue to shift and change for the better, the world around us will too.

One of the most effective ways to make a difference is to do “the work” on yourself. Consciously release your resistance to what “is”, accept things as they are, and change what you can. As you work with your own energy, the energy around you will shift as well. If you don’t believe it, just play with this concept. You will soon see evidence of your thoughts, feelings and beliefs playing out in front of you. Sometimes we are blind to this. As you tune in and observe what really shows up in your world each day, you may be delighted to realize how you, the observer, can change what is being observed. The world is one big mirror of our collective consciousness. We are all responsible for what is going on. You can begin by being more compassionate, caring and kind with yourself. Just do a little bit more every day. When you have a setback, accept it and begin again. Living your life this way can be a lot of fun and make a big difference in the world at large.

Our violent crime rate has dropped for four consecutive years. This is a good thing and each of us has contributed to it in one way or another. Maybe in 2012 we’ll see an even bigger jump. Let’s each BE the change we want to see in the world.

Mystery versus Mastery

” Much of life can never be explained but only witnessed”. From Kitchen Table Wisdom, Rachel Naomi Remen

Perhaps the concept of mastery in life is best left behind and learning to flow with the mystery, opening to grace, living with truth and the full expression of who you are—warts and all—is a more graceful path…an honest path with heart. And perhaps that is mastery in the end.

Excerpt from EnlighteNext Magazine

A fascinating interview with Dr. Beatrice Bruteau

Here’s what Elizabeth Debold has to say about Dr. Bruteau–

“This interview reveals a next step for humanity that no developmental psychologist would dream of. Perhaps it has to do with Bruteau’s intellectual grasp of a range of disciplines—she holds advanced degrees in mathematics, philosophy, and religion. Drawing on the deepest mystical teachings and the best of science, her vision places human development within the context of cosmic development. And that vantage point gives us a glimpse far beyond the present into an unimaginable future.”

WIE: The great evolutionary thinkers have all also made the point that the human ability to choose, to intelligently exercise free will or volition, is what sets us apart from other creatures. Can you say a little more about the significance of choice?

BB: You see, evolution up to this point has gone by happenstance and natural selection. The individual animal doesn’t get to choose how it’s going to evolve. But the individual human being can, and we, by our concerted intention, can make something that hasn’t existed before. If we are to make this change in favor of forming a New Being, we will have to redirect our energy currents. And it will take energy even to make that option. You see, our energy currents are egocentric—the currents flow out from the ego, grasp what’s good for the ego, and flow back to the ego. This energy pattern cannot form a creative union because it tries to assimilate all other beings to the being of the ego. And because of that, it’s important that we make a big effort to realize the True Self—otherwise we’re running entirely on the motives to exploit and dominate—the motives that are endangering the world.

Surrender the Mind—Open The Heart to Love

Tuesday, August 17th, 2010

Great commentary on the working of the mind–and finding the heartbeat of the universe…the God within>

Bedes Griffith was a Catholic monk who adopted the trappings of Hindu monastic life and entered into dialogue with Hinduism. Griffiths wrote twelve books on Hindu-Christian dialogue. Griffiths’s form of Vedanta-inspired Christianity is called Wisdom Christianity.[citation needed]

Griffiths was a proponent of integral thought, which attempts to harmonize scientific and spiritual world views. In a 1983 interview he stated,

We’re now being challenged to create a theology which would use the findings of modern science and eastern mysticism which, as you know, coincide so much, and to evolve from that a new theology which would be much more adequate.”[1]

Griffiths died at Shantivanam in 1993, aged 86. The archives of the Bede Griffiths Trust are located at the Graduate Theological Union in Berkeley, California. ( From Wikipedia)

Living Energy: Where? When? For What?

Friday, June 11th, 2010

When do you want to use ‘energy work’ in your life? Always, for everything, everywhere!

We tend to think in terms of energy for healing and in fact that is often the entry point for learning about energy. But the fact is that we are always engaging and using energy. Generally we do not think about or understand its function, structure or its influence in our lives. That being the case, we live with default patterns that contribute to a sense of lack of control over large parts of our life experience.

Everything is energy. Our thoughts, feelings, dreams, hopes and fears are all vibrations that move through us and out into the universal field of which we are all a part. Our minds (scattered throughout our body not simply a byproduct of brain activity) and hearts are the main terminals for generating the energy of thought and feeling that course through our being and out into the world.

Once we understand energy, our personal patterns and how to consciously engage and work with this personal power we can be much more effective in the creative process. We can learn how to harness, direct and flow energy to work for our benefit rather than experiencing the random and often chaotic results of unconscious default patterns.

Your Soul’s Purpose

Sunday, May 23rd, 2010

Do you wonder about your soul’s journey? Do you ever wish you had more information about your life purpose? Do you ever ask the question, “What AM I doing here?”

Join us on Monday’s radio show when we interview Carol Ciocco and hear about her work with Shamanic Astrology and how it helps to answer these questions. If you cannot join us live, the show will be available for download immediately following its conclusion.

Shamanic Astrology is a non-traditional, cutting-edge, evolutionary astrological system that directly focuses on the journey of your soul. In a Shamanic Astrology Reading we look to the birth chart to see where we came from (our karmic past “rut” that must be avoided) and where our Soul intends us to go (our Leading Edge of Evolution). When we move into the leading edge of our evolutionary path, we feel alive, passionate and filled with joy. Joy leads to service and we move forward on the Soul’s ultimate purpose: to take on greater and greater Light, to gain en-light-enment.

2012: When Spirit Hits the Sidewalk!

2012: When Spirit Hits the Sidewalk!

Our radio show topic for the month of March has been on the changes associated with the year 2012 and how we can prepare and move forward in positive and effective ways to support our well-being.

This Monday we will be completing our series on this topic when we talk about

2012: When Spirit Hits the Sidewalk!

When Spirit Hits the Sidewalk!  What does this mean?

Broadly this phrase is referring to a shift in our spiritual focus from a separatist, isolated perspective to a more inclusive and integrated perspective.

More simply said, we are moving into a time where the nature of our spiritual being is becoming more a part of our everyday awareness and interaction with our world—the people, places and things we contact each day. This is both a challenge and a welcome opportunity to live our lives from a deeper and richer place within each of us and to connect in ways that enrich each one of us as well as our world.

We are in the process of moving from one paradigm to another in our world and this affects every area of life including the spiritual.

Some of the topics we will talk about on Monday are:

Masculine and Feminine Power and how they differ

How the shift in our view of power affects spirituality

What is integral spirituality?

How does the old model of spirituality differ in terms of goals and practice?

This show is prerecorded so there is no call in. You can access the show from our website, www.livingenergyworks.com or go directly to Blog Talk Radio at the link below.
