Wisdom for Wednesday–and Everyday

Wednesday, November 18th, 2009

From one of my favorite people, a wonderful statement on shifting from a feeling of powerlessness to one of empowerment.

“Who lives a life of joy? Who in this society knows the day to day thrill and privilege of being alive?”

These two questions can lead us all to a daily choice-

1. To let drop away all that blocks our experience of  life as a gift and privilege

2. To do what it takes for the energy of joy to find its free expression through our being.

The “New Human” and Conscious Compassion

Friday, November 6th, 2009

The term “new human” has been used as a way to  describe ourselves as we move along the path of evolving our human nature and integrate more of our spiritual capacity in our daily lives.

A recent experience at a presentation Peg and I did has led me to thinking that more conscious compassion may be a part of this new human presence and expression.

The purpose of our presentation was to use Aura Imaging to show people their energy in real time. This is a type of biofeedback that allows you to see what your energy looks like first without any attention and then how it shifts as you experiment with various mind states and stimuli.

In groups when we have done these demonstrations people are often most amazed to see how different each person’s energy is, as well as how easily their energy shifts even with small changes in intention and attention.

This particular evening all was going along pretty typically until one woman sat and I noticed right away that I felt a strong urge to place my hands on her shoulders and “run energy” to her. I just chalked that up to my thinking it had simply occurred to me that it would be fun to show the group the effect of that. However, once she was situated on the equipment I could see that her aura was showing signs of turbulence, disorganization and incoherence especially around her heart chakra. When I placed my hands on her shoulders I could feel a deep inner trembling in her. When I asked if she was experiecing any kind of pain or discomfort she began to weep and said she had broken up with a boyfriend that day.

It then occurred to me to ask the group to come and encircle her and simply send whatever feelings of love and care that they could. Its worth mentioning here that these people were not energy healers and did not know this woman, they were  simply folks from all walks of life who were interested in the topic of energy and its effects.

As we stood in a quiet space and simply held that intention of flowing love and care, everyone could watch on the computer screen as the aura shifted and changed . The whole experience was less than five minutes but we all watched as  the darkness in her field dissipated, the earlier signs of turbulence faded and her energy became more smooth and flowing. In addition a beautiful pink color began to suffuse her field especially in the heart area. This is a color that I have seen frequently when healing energy is flowed either within or to a person.

In addition to the changes we were seeing on the screen, there were signs externally that something was shifting for this person. The tears stopped, her body relaxed, she became more settled and said with surprise in her voice that she was feeling much better. What she described was feeling much stronger and centered with the sharpness gone out of her pain. She began to speak more about how she felt she would move on from this experience rather than about being overcome and paralyzed by her grief. Her conversation reflected that she was regaining her inner balance and her composure and was indicating that she was beginning to feel that she would be able to move beyond the immobilization, disorientation and disorganization that she had felt for most of that day.

Did this  experience last beyond the time of the presentation? I do not know. What I do know is that for a moment she and we had a real time example of how we can all care for, support and nurture each other simply with a moment of focused compassion.  We all had a visual representation now of how our conscious intention affected energy. Perhaps moreimportantly we had a very real experience of being able to make a difference even with a stranger by how we hold and express our selves through our energy. And of course, even if this woman’s pain reemerged with all its intensity, she now had had an experience that showed her that she could move beyond and feel differently and did not have to be a “victim” of her pain.

We can all give ourselves and others the gift of energy. Doing so enlivens both the giver and the receiver. Simply being present and intending care can help support a person to move to the next best place for them. Receiving the energy of care frees us up and clears a space to be able to know our next best step on the path of healing and wholeness.

Center–Ground of Being

Tuesday, July 28th, 2009

In my mind this ground of Being is not only THE source of the peace and happiness we seek but it is also the space from which we create more easily, effortlessly. It is from this space that we can create most effortlessly the best of ourselves…and a life that nurtures, supports and enlivens us and those around us.

Paying Attention/Being Present

Something to think about…

This is circulating the internet—not sure of the original source but it is thought provoking and a good reminder to pay attention, be present to your world and look for beauty in uncommon places!

Washington DC Metro Station on a cold January morning in 2007. He played six Bach pieces for about 45 minutes. During that time approx 2 thousand people went through the station, most of them on their way to work. After 3 minutes a middle aged man noticed there was a musician playing. He slowed his pace and stopped for a few seconds and then hurried to meet his schedule.

4 minutes later:
the violinist received his first dollar: a woman threw the money in the till and, without stopping, continued to walk.

6 minutes:
A young man leaned against the wall to listen to him, then looked at his watch and started to walk again.

10 minutes:
A 3 year old boy stopped but his mother tugged him along hurriedly, as the kid stopped to look at the violinist. Finally the mother pushed hard and the child continued to walk, turning his head all the time. This action was repeated by several other children. Every parent, without exception, forced them to move on.

45 minutes:
The musician played.  Only 6 people stopped and stayed for a while. About 20 gave him money but continued to walk their normal pace.
He collected $32.

1 hour:
He finished playing and silence took over. No one noticed. No one applauded, nor was there any recognition.

No one knew this but the violinist was Joshua Bell, one of the best musicians in the world. He played one of the most intricate pieces ever written, with a violin worth $3.5 million dollars. Two days before Joshua Bell sold out a theater in Boston where the seats averaged $100.

This is a real story. Joshua Bell playing incognito in the metro station was organized by the Washington Post as part of a social experiment about perception, taste and people’s priorities. The questions raised: in a common place environment at an inappropriate hour, do we perceive beauty? Do we stop to appreciate it? Do we recognize talent in an unexpected context?

One possible conclusion reached from this experiment could be:

If we do not have a moment to stop and listen to one of the best musicians in the world playing some of the finest music ever written, with one of the most beautiful instruments ….

How many other things are we missing?

What will YOU see today if you commit to being more present to the moment and receiving the world through eyes open to beauty?

From The Institute of Noetic Sciences

“Recent discoveries have shown that the heart generates a mysterious and powerful electromagnetic field. In this video, Rollin McCraty, Ph.D, Executive VP and Director of Research for the Institute of HeartMath, explores the scientific basis for understanding the ways in which we are deeply connected with each other.”

Happiness

Wednesday, December 26th, 2007

Happiness is a state of being that arises from within in response to how we are experiencing a present moment. The lower mind, the province of our habitual mental and emotional states need to be trained to choose happiness. We can cultivate the energy of happiness through our choices of how and what to focus on…we can choose to make it a daily practice to engage in activities that build and support feeling happy. In short, we can make happiness a habit!

Pennies From Heaven

Saturday, August 18th, 2007

As I was out for a walk this morning I was tuning into the the feel of the wind blowing through the air. I began thinking about how signs of fall were beginning to emerge. The sky was clear blue, the clouds were puffy, a few leaves were beginning to turn color, and the air felt so clean and fresh.

As a walked along I looked down and noticed a shiny penny in the dirt.  I smiled, picked it up and placed it in my pocket and then expressed gratitude.  I love finding pennies … particularly when I am out walking.  I refer to them as “pennies from heaven.”  After placing the penny in my pocket I thought about how delightful it would be if I found three of them along my walk today … and sure enough, I did!  As I walked along I continued to think about how wonderful the breeze felt and I was noticing all of the changes to the neighborhood.  We’ve been away most of the summer and I just happened to be “home” this weekend.

Within a half mile of the first penny, I spotted a second one.  I stooped down, picked it up and placed it in my pocket.  Again I expressed gratitude for my double-good luck.  I also thought how cool it would be to find a third penny. Afterall. three is a very powerful number and many things happen in groups of three.

I continued my walk and to my delight, I spotted a third penny about a quarter mile away from the second penny.  Wow! I was amazed, delighted and extremely grateful.  Again, I quietly expressed my thanks and chuckled at how easy to was to spot these pennies today.

The amazing thing is that today was the first day since late June that I walked my “usual” route.  I was tuning into everything around me. I love to see how environments shift and change after being away for a while.

Pennies have long been a sign of blessings for me.  They are a signal that everything is OK, that I’m on the right track. They are a message of encouragement … to keep doing what I’m doing.  A few years ago my Mom mentioned that she used to find pennies often as a child.  A friend of mine who was visiting that day (and doing a “reading” with my mom) mentioned that those pennies were a gift from her father … that the pennies she often found as a child were a signal that her father was close by, at least in spirit.  The conversation about the pennies was comforting to my mom. She was 85 at the time and this was one of the few times she spoke about growing up.  She never knew her father.

I deposited my three pennies into the ”treasure box” on my desk. They are a constant reminder that life is full of delights, blessing and surprises.  Notice everything around you. Sometimes the most obvious is in the most simple.  As we learn to let go of what holds us back, it often turns out that everything we need is all around us.  We just need to open our hearts and minds to accept what simply IS.

Let today’s breeze blow many blessings your way.  Just let them in.
