Moving From Acceptance to Compassion

Thursday, September 16th, 2010

Here is a quote that I used in our radio show this week. I think it is really helpful and motivating to know that there is something very real going on physiologically with a lot of spiritual concepts and practices.

“When we accept ourselves for who we are_as people filled with strengths and weaknesses–it’s easier to accept the flaws we find in others. Acceptance makes it easier to tolerate differences, and this allows for greater cooperation. Meditation specifically strengthens the key neural circuitthat connects our cognitive skills with our social skills and our emotions, and the end result of a well functioning brain is the generation of deep compassion and love. And unlike other animals, we appear to have the only brain that can show compassion toward every living thing on the planet. That, truly, is an amazing neurological feat. ” Andrew Newberg, M.D.

Acceptance as Stress Management: Part II

Friday, September 10th, 2010

Acceptance permits you to remain neutral and so you can see more clearly where the best efforts are to be made in a given situation. The calmness that accompanies acceptance can open you to wider perception and it helps you to move from a position of blaming to one of resolving problems. Energetically acceptance opens your field and allows for more positive flow and hence a magnetism for “greater good” to be attracted to you.

Typically people who embody the quality of acceptance have a sense of balance, appropriateness, self discipline and mastery about them. At this level equality becomes truly honored and not just a lofty ideal to be spouted about. So it follows that there is greater tolerance for diversity and more inclusion which always results in greater richness, growth and deeper connection for all involved….a field where the best in all of us can grow.

Acceptance as Stress Management

Thursday, September 9th, 2010

Acceptance is one of those feelings that are grossly misunderstood. Many think that adopting an attitude of acceptance means passivity or the condoning of violent or malicious acts. Th is not the case. Acceptance merely means to acknowledge a given situation ‘as is’ and stop experiencing feelings of resistance that only cause you to feel stressed. This allows you to remain engaged in life without uselessly forcing your own agenda. Instead of using precious energy to resist or fight in vain, you are open to many more possible and potent outcomes. It is truly amazing to watch what happens when you truly embrace acceptance… perhaps the most amazing thing is that so many problems simply fall away!

Practicing acceptance can be a powerful stress management tool!

Transformers and Personal Energy Crisis

Wednesday, September 8th, 2010

Human beings are Transformers! We are always influencing, moving, managing and transforming our energy. This is generally an unconscious process.  Because our energy management is typically out of awareness, it we may not be reaping the benefits we’d like or that are possible.

Quantum Physics tells us that there is a constant and even supply of universal energy. It tells us that energy cannot be created or destroyed. So what is an energy crisis?

A personal energy crisis is simply a bottleneck in the flow of energy throughout the bodymind. Somewhere within energy is slowed, stopped or blocked and a logjam is created. Problems then emerge at the site of the logjam and sometimes downstream from this site as well. At the least the restriction results in a depletion of energy; more chronically, blockages, distortions and depletions within the energy system lead to physical and psychological problems.

Combat Fear–Practice Happiness

Thursday, September 2nd, 2010

We forget in the stress of daily life that we can choose to shift our feelings away from the negative and toward the positive. Each time we decide to “practice happiness” we strengthen the soul muscle that will help us create more of what we do want and less of what we don’t want.

We may not be able to changes some of the difiicult things that emerge in life, but we can always choose how we want to feel and how we want to respond. As we do, things have a way of shifting in the outer world as well. BUT perhaps even more important, we strengthen and make our energy more coherent and increase the stability of our inner resources….which not only helps us to rise to challenges, but also helps to bring about more positive circumstances, people, places and things…the kind of circular thinking that is helpful instead of soul deadening.

Find, notice a moment where you can create or experience happiness. Make it a game to find as many times throughout the day as you can to focus on a happy feeling. Focus on it, flow with it, expand into it without grasping. See how many happy moments you can collect (seems more useful that some of the other stuff we collect! :)  )

Happy holiday weeknd to all!

Freedom from Fear

Wednesday, September 1st, 2010

“Fear constitutes a much larger and more comprehensive presence than has yet been realized. Beginning in the nineteenth century, therapeutic psychology sought to identify the symptoms related to this phenomenon. The types of fear recognized included hysteria, behind which some trauma, real or imaged, was always to be found; shell shock or combat neurosis, now commonly called post-traumatic stress syndrome, which was first investigated after World War I; abuse and domestic violence; fear of natural catastrophes such as earthquakes, hurricanes, tornadoes, or fire; individual phobias such as panic attacks, anxieties, and obsessive-compulsive disorders.

The reality of fear is far more wide-ranging, however. Working with victims of trauma does little to impede the larger presence of fear in the world. The goal is to become more conscious of what we are dealing with and to recognize that different fears require different capacity of soul to overcome them. The need is not to remove fear from the world, but instead to develop in ourselves the psychic capacity to confront its destructive power. In this realm, consciousness, coupled with love, is everything. Enlarging consciousness to include an awareness of soul allows a healthy struggle with fear, and love makes possible its transformation, not just within ourselves but also within the world.” Robert Sardello, Freeing the Soul From Fear

Training ourselves to release fear and choosing to feel love more often—instead–helps to attune our energy to more of what we DO want to experience.
